The Great Asian Republic has collapsed. Unemployment is above 15 percent and students attack teachers in schools, so the government doesn't have a choice but to invent a 'game' to keep the order in Japan's society. This is the 'Battle Royale', also known as 'Survival Program'. Every year the government chooses a middle school class of 15 years old students and takes them to an isolated island, where they have to kill each other in order to save oneself. Only one can survive.

This year it's the same. But this time, a student -- Nanahara Shuuya -- decides he won't play. He and his friends, Noriko and Kawada Shogo, are trying to survive and save everyone. But time is short, and the students are dying one after another.
