Synopsis

The story revolves around Sugihara who was born in Japan to a Korean family. His father, former boxing champion, taught him boxing ever since he was a kid and it became useful when he transferred to a Japanese high school and was often getting ganged up by other students. In that school he falls in love with a girl and starts dating her. Sugihara hasn't told her yet that he has Korean blood running inside him because it might ruin their relationship, as Koreans are being harassed in their society. How will their love turn out and will he ever be considered as 'human' in society?

Both films discuss the issue of Korean people living in Japan, their families and so on. They show the difficulties those people have to face and the conflict they have with themselves being both Japanese and Korean at the same time.

I could relate to this movie in some ways, so I really liked it, but it was more of a love-story than sugihara's struggle in the Japanese society

@iluvlynx you should watch kazoku no kuni. It's a recent film based on true story that shows that no, it didn't change.

It kind of bothers me how old Shibasaki Kou looks, even though it seems like she actually was around high school age.
I had no idea until now there was a term for being of Korean nationality and living in Japan.
It's really quite sad to see how Japanese seemed to view outsiders. I hope that it's changed much more now.
It's why I'm glad that the movie ended that way, showing that we have the potential of overcoming these barriers that the older generations put up between us all.

Clear message told in a unique way. Great movie!
Good it was on the frontsite and had Shibasaki Kou in it. I would have missed it otherwise.

I really, really liked that movie!!!
Especially if you're interested in Zainichi this is definitely something you should watch. It had a lot of interesting, moving scenes.
