In the 1930s, the second generation of Japanese immigrants in Canada are still having a rough time because of racial discrimination. They are considered filthy job stealers, and most Canadians just don't want to mingle with them.
In the midst of the rough times, Asahi, a baseball team, comes to life in Vancouver. The members work and practice everyday and finally earn a spot in the championship. But their small body build cannot stand the ground against the big, muscular Canadian teams, so they suffer loss after loss. That's when Reggie realizes, Asahi needs to play a different kind of baseball, a style that later comes to be known as 'brain baseball'.
