Kim Hye Jin, who used to be beautiful when she was younger, now doesn't look as good any more and on top of that works at a bar. Her childhood friend, Ji Seong Jun, who always was the ugly ducking, on the contrary, grew up to be a beautiful man. The two meet and don't recognise each other at first, but soon their childhood bonds prove to be stronger than anything.
‘She was Pretty’ is about a girl, Kim Hye Jin, who once looked pretty, and her first love, Ji Seong Jun, (you’ve guessed it, who was once chubby and fat). Seong Jun plans to meet up with Hye Jin, but she gets scared that he might run away from her due to her looks, so she makes her best friend pretend to be her.
When I first heard about this drama, I was so excited to watch it because it seemed a little different from that usual “nice girl meets arrogant guy, fall in love, the end” story line. But, it was nothing special. The drama was so addictive, until it hit a certain point, and it was such a drag to watch. It got so bad I started skipping parts. The main leads, that were once fun to watch, became like every other “im so in love” leads, and the drama got so predictable by ep.6
She was pretty is like any good romantic comedy; lighthearted, fun and driven by entertaining, heartfelt characters. And while it does have some pitfalls, the show manages to be enjoyable throughout.
The main driving force of the show are the characters. Winningly played, the main quartet are fun to watch. And while they may occasionally drive you up the wall, they all manage to tug on the heart strings and surprise you in delightful ways. And the best part is they all stay true to their personalities even as they grow, so while they do change and mature, their core stays rooted.
The main plots - the workplace and the romance - sometimes snag and dragged, with importance placed on aspects that don`t quite ring true. But because they affect and are driven by the characters, it never fails to keep you interested and never feels bland.
Despite the flaws, an enjoyable watch for the characters alone.
