"Save Me" is esentially about a girl trapped in the secluded life of a religious cult determined to escape, and a group of friends who try to help her escape.
What I found most fascinating and refreshing was the plot itself, since I can't recall any other show or movie I've seen so far that centers around a religious cult. Therefore I was intrigued to watch this show, although a bit sceptical it would actually deliver on such a heavy theme.
But it did - the writting is great and the directing is solid. The plot progresses at a good pace and I was anxious to see each new episode. It is gritty, and dares to delve deep into the dark world of craziness that religious cults can be (it makes you angry sometimes too).
It might not be for the soft-hearted; but if you like something more dark and serious, it might be up your alley.
When it comes to acting - the supporting cast did a good job, Seo Ye Ji surprised me with a great performance, but Taecyeon continues to show lack of actng talent as he was the obvious weak link in the cast. With an actual actor this could be an even better drama, but oh well... (I have nothing against him as an idol or whatever else he does, but he is a seriously bad actor).
The true star of the show I think, is Woo Do Hwan (playing Dong Cheol) who put in a great performance and got us all rooting for him. His eyes are very expressive and the sad background of his character makes you immediatelly support him and wish for his happiness by the end of the show.
Starting this drama, I didn't really have any expectations, especially since I was unfamiliar with both the writers and the director, and the cast didn't exactly look promising either. But it turned out to be one of the best dramas this year for me, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes this genre and looks for a drama with no romance.
