Hmm, psychologically undeveloped till the end. Storyline would have been entertaining otherwise. 2/5

Where did all these super flashy Chinese period dramas which were released last year come from? I suppose maybe John Woo lit a fire under every director's ass with Red Cliff or that Korea set the trend last decade. It's funny how Chinese period drama has, in just a couple of years, gone from having production quality vastly inferior to the Japanese counter-parts to now completely outshine them. So much potential - now use it.

Zhao shi gu er has frankly upset me quite a bit. It's good, sure, or at least it was at some point. 123 minutes is about half the time this story would deserve and trying to squeeze everything into it has left it half dead. If there is ever a director's cut of this, then we're up for something really, really good. As of now I'll rate it 2/5.
