Fujioka Haruhi is a normal teenager going into a school for the absurdly rich. Wandering into the high school's own host club -- a group of young boys whose job it is to keep their female clients dazzled and charmed -- Haruhi accidentally knocks over an expensive vase with no way to pay for it. The host club's Prince, Suou Tamaki, proposes that their new debtor make up for the vase by becoming a host in their club. Things appear to be going quite well. The only problem, of course, is that Haruhi is unavoidably a girl.
Haruhi is the only lucky common girl, who attends a prestigious high school that is only attended by rich. When she enters a room of that school, she destroys a very expensiv vase and to be able to pay it off, she has to work for the club that is in that room - the ouran high school host club! At first, all the host club members think that she is actually a boy, but it soon is discovered that Haruhi isn't and so they try to keep it secret from the clients of their host club.
It's based on the anime and manga and even though I've read the manga a long, long time ago, I still could remember most of the stuff that happened in the drama. The characters were exactly like the manga and even the style of the drama is more like an anime. Many animations make it feel like an anime, especially whenever there is Honey-senpai.
For the acting, I can't complain! The same awkwardness that you can see in the anime is displayed in the drama as well. It's overacted and cheesy, the characters are strange and crazy. It's everything you want from an manga adaption. The story itself is cute and nothing too exciting. The charm point are the characters. It's not even the gender bender that's in the center of the storyline. It's a simple slice of life and a bit of romance.
I enjoyed watching it, but something was lacking for me to make it a masterpiece. So 4* and a recommendation if you're looking for a comedy!
In both, a girl is mistaken for a boy and starts working like a prince in a coffee shop/host club. While The 1st Shop Of Coffee Prince is more dramatic, Ouran High School Host Club is more light-hearted.
