Synopsis

It's 1963. Every morning Umi raises the signal flags up on top of Poppy Hill, in memory of her father who passed away in the Korean War. Little does she know that each day the flags are seen by Shun, her upperclassmen, from his father's tugboat as it passes by. Shun and Umi meet in school, and as they band the student body together to save the beloved clubhouse from plans for demolition in preparation for the Olympics, gradually Shun and Umi grow to be more than just friends. Unfortunately, the question of Shun's parentage, and that he may be Umi's brother, forces them apart. However, Umi is not to be swayed from either the clubhouse, or from her feelings for Shun, and the truth about Shun is revealed the same day the fate of the clubhouse is revealed.

Cute little movie, nice for a watch in between. Typical Ghibli atmosphere that's mesmerizing and calming at the same time. Totally watched this for Okada speaking Kazama Shun's character, but I COULD BARELY TELL IT'S HIM? (I guess that means he did a very good job?)

Lovely movie, not Ghibli's best but still fascinating = ]

Love, love, love it!

Yes, the animation and soundtrack are great indeed; I especially liked the scenes in town and in the clubhouse with so many different people and things to discover. Nonetheless, the plot was a little bit disappointing :I
The sidestory, which deals with the clubhouse, is quite good, but the "love"/father-sister-brother-storyline is somehow not satisfying. They deal with some important things just for a too short time, for example the "You-are-my-sister"-moment or the moment, when they are confessing their feelings to each other. Maybe this film could have been better with a longer duration..

This was SUPERB. The level of visual detail alone made it worth watching, but the film also sports a delightful soundtrack and a charming interweaving of stories. The characters were perfectly endearing.

This is not for everyone. It doesn't have the loud characters and storytelling of the better-known Ghibli films. But please watch this with an open mind! It's an incredibly subtle film and WELL worth devoting 90 minutes of your day to.

This is for rainy days, if you don't have anything else to do.
