Overlapping Collars: A List of Period Drama

spluffen 16 Jul, 2010
I've been on this site for a few months now and I have been enjoying it all the way. People who've stumbled across my profile might have noticed I'm into period drama. This is mainly because of my great interest in classical East Asian history and culture and not so much in the martial arts as one otherwise could perceive.

I've been in several different communities dealing with East Asian (usually mainly Japanese) pop culture for the last couple of years and almost always there tend to be loads of warm love sent in the direction of Japanese (or other East Asian countries') culture and heritage. Many, however, aren't really well educated in that subject (not saying I am that myself either).

Reading history books can often be a bothersome job and if you know nothing it is often hard to know where to start. Therefore, watching costume drama can teach you a lot of general stuff about history. Be critical, though. There are a lot of made-up stereotypes; people in ancient China could probably not fly at all. Anyway, I have now started on this list of period drama, sorted by dynasty/period, which I have been planning for a long time.

This list covers drama with a classical east Asian setting; there will be no Qing dynasty or 20th century costume pieces. Also I will exclude titles featuring too many fantasy elements and those which have too inaccurate visuals (clothing, weaponry, architecture etc.).

China pre-1644
Japan pre-1868
Korea pre-1897
and hypothetically Vietnam (despite research I haven't been able to find any Vietnamese costume drama.
Vietnamese! Wohoo, finally! Im going to do some research on Vietnamese history to determine the bracket. Brb.

Thailand will not be included since this is a list of East Asian (sinosphere) historical drama.

Drama Series
Shogun (USA, set in Japan, Edo period) (1980)

As of yet unidentified dramas (AKA: the reminder-list and the please-help-out-by-whatever-info-you-can-list)
China:
三娘教子 (Prosperous of Family) (1970) (Note: Hahahaha, golden English title)
飛龍山 (Fly Dragon Mountain) (1971)
A Valiant Villain 乾坤三決鬥 (1969)
Hei tie (1969)

And there we make a pause. This thread is a work in progress; more titles which I haven't had the time to include yet will soon follow. If you want to participate or say anything about this, feel free to contact me by pm or by answering in this thread.

So, anyway, I thought I'd point one thing out for the convenience of people who want to contribute to this thread. To see if a Japanese or Korean drama is set in a classical environment is often fairly easy. If all people in it don't wear modern day clothing like suits or shirts then you're most likely before the year 1900. Finding out if a Chinese drama is set before the Manchurian Qing dynasty can be a little more tricky if you haven't payed attention to that kind of stuff earlier. Here, too, clothing and appearance is the easiest thing to judge from.

During the Qing dynasty most, if not all, men wore their hair braided into a long ponytail and kept their forehead shaved.

In movies set in the Qing dynasty, people working for the government will often wear a circular black cap which is almost always red in the top middle. This hat is known as the "Qing guanmao". Han Chinese hats do, most of the time, not appear in this shape and will often be narrower and taller.

Manchu clothing is kept together using buttons, much like a western shirt. Han Chinese clothing has the collars overlap and is tied together with a sash, the same way as a kimono.

In Chinese films, if chairs are missing in the furniture and very low tables are used since people sit on the floor, you are most likely somewhere before the Song dynasty.

Cool of you to list it all, by the way, I've got the impression that you mislinked da bing xiao jiang, at least for me a forum link opens instead of the drama page..

Damn, and I just realised that Dong Xie Xi Du's info is not entirely correct, at least what concerns the posters..there's Ashes of Time, and Ashes of Time Redux (re-edited, and re-released version) as far as I recall, so I'll have to look into that one as soon as possible.

Nice list! :) Thank you for sharing this.

I added a bunch of Korean series and a few Chinese. But I'll put this list on hold over the weekend as I won't be at home. If anyone have any particular wishes of what sort of things to be added next, please express your wishes in this thread or by pm and I'll handle it as prio #1 when I get back. So long

You're missing Kim Su Ro, which is about the founder of Geumgwan Gaya.

Thank you, I'll add that later. In fact I am missing a lot more than what is already listed. I'll fix this once I have some more free hours.
