Synopsis

At the height of imperialism in the 1930s, Lee Gang To is a high ranking officer of the Japanese police force. Reviled by his fellow Koreans as a traitor to his own country, the coldly pragmatic Gang To chose to pledge his loyalty to the Japanese government and the emperor, a decision even his mother scorns him for, his late father having sacrificed everything to reclaim their homeland. While skilled at his job, he's soon being thwarted at every turn by the mysterious Gaksital, a masked hero to the people and a symbol of the independence movement. After a shocking personal discovery, both present tragedy and memories of his own past open his eyes anew to the true nature of his country’s oppressors, and Gang To finds himself donning Gaksital's mask, fighting against the very people he worked alongside to become Korea’s unlikely savior.

The male lead in both dramas helps the poor citizens who are unfairly treated by the nobles. The similarity of these dramas is that they show how and why the main character became a masked hero.

Both lead protagonists are seeking revenge for the sake of their fathers. In both, highly-regarded people did something that both leads, who have a nickname ("Bridal Mask" and "City Hunter") and wear a mask to hide their identity, want to be revealed. Both of them have quite good fighting scenes and also a sorrowful romance.

Joo Won and Park Ki Woong were amazing! This drama made me so emotionally drained. Park Ki Woong played a man you wanted to hate, but couldn't either. I have to be honest though, Jin Se Yeon wasn't great. I think they could have found a better actress for her role. She was just a bit boring to me. Overall, this was still a great drama with the good storyline, action scenes, and characters.

What a great drama! Well written, good soundtrack, good action scenes, good actors and characters, never rushing and never slowing down, not even at the end. A great drama with a great story. It was also emotionally draining and has an unpredictable ending. Since Kang To became Bridal Mask, I watched every episode with my heart in my hands, partially because I couldn't predict at all what was going to happen at the end. That was making me nervous, in a good way. Knowing a bit about this part of Korea's real history is a tiny spoiler, but while watching Bridal Mask, I wasn't sure of anything anymore. That was a first for me. I've never watched a drama that gave me such feelings. I think Bridal Mask is an example of how a drama should be written: with a unpredictable ending, without rushing and without slowing down. In my opinion, because of all that and the soundtrack that probably won't be forgotten by those who watched it, Bridal Mask is a drama to be remembered. But I don't think I will ever watch it again, or at least not in the near future, because it drained me emotionally and I'm still feeling the after effects, specially when I listen to the song Holy (from the soundtrack).

So, if this is your kind of drama and you're pondering if you'll watch it or not, stop wasting time and go for it ;-) Take your time between the episodes if you need, but do not give up. It is worthwhile.

I´m not really sure how I feel about this one actually. It was too long, really =( Around episode 24/25 I got emotionally drained and had to take a pause. I guess I took a too long pause because I never got into it again.
And to be honest it was quite predictable sometimes...
seriously though, when Haeseok died, I couldn´t take it. I still tear up just thinking of him. He´s the most pitiful character and I want to build a freaking temple in his honor.

This is not at all a fanvid I made to deal with my Haeseok feels... *cough cough*

It has been a long time since I watched a great drama like this. I thought it was another overrated drama but I was totally wrong. I think this is one of the best written dramas. I love all of this drama: the story, the characters, the cinematography, the action, the editing, the soundtrack. The ONLY thing I dislike is the choice of the female lead. I didn't like her acting and her portrait of Mok Dan's character.
